Monthly Support Group

Meets the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7:00 p.m)

PFLAG Los Angeles had added a second support group in a new location. On the second Thursday of every month gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons and their families and friends will have a safe, welcoming place to talk.

Whether your are LGBTQ or the parent of a child of any age dealing with issues of sexual orientation and gender identity, you will have the opportunity to talk about your experiences, ask questions, and get information. The group is run by trained facilitators Dawn, mother of a transgendered child, and Versil, a gay man and educator, with the support of parents and chapter leaders from PFLAG Los Angeles who have gay children.

Participants’ identities are completely confidential and you are invited to come and listen if you don’t feel ready to talk.

LGBT Youth

SABORES Youth Program
The Sabores Youth Program is one of Bienestar’s HIV prevention programs geared to educate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) youth ages of 14 to 24. Sabores is offered in Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties. Sabores focuses on fostering the health and well-being of LGBT youth. The program offers individual counseling, weekly support groups and social events that are held in a substance-free, safe-space and confidential environment.

Come meet other youth like you. Our goal is to reduce new cases of HIV among youth, promote safer sex and to talk about issues that really matter to YOU! These issues include: coming out, dating, relationships, and homophobia.

Mpowerment
Mpowerment is a Community Level Intervention targeting gay/bisexual Latino youth ages 18 to 24. The goal of this intervention is to reduce new cases of HIV infection among this population and to address HIV stigma.

Through peer-led workshops, participants learn skills to practice safer sex, safer sex negotiation and increase condom use. Participants also gain knowledge about HIV prevention and transmission methods.

In addition to information, participants are referred to HIV testing and STD screening.

PFLAG Long Beach meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at First Congregational Church at 3rd Street and Cedar Avenue in Long Beach.
Meetings generally consist of a short business session, a presentation by an invited speaker, a refreshment break and ends with a group rap session where those in attendance share what is going on in their family. It is also okay if someone just needs to listen. PFLAG offers a warm, caring and nonjudgmental atmosphere for all. There is also a variety of educational books and materials available at the meetings.

Gina Ann Glass, Transgendered Individuals
In 1993, Gina Ann Glass founded what has become the most successful transgendered support group in Riverside County, called Born Free. She followed up in 1995 by starting Mariposa, a transgender support group, for the Palm Springs desert communities. Gina's affiliate with the gay and lesbian started in 1994 when she joined a gay and lesbian square dance group in Pomona called Royalty Squares. She has served the Palm Springs PFLAG chapter as secretary for the last three years and has been PFLAG's Southern Pacific Transgendered Special Outreach Network (TSON) coordinator. Gina Ann Glass has been encouraging PFLAG chapters to include support for the transgendered and their families, along with TSON, was successful this September in getting the term "transgendered" included in the national PFLAG By-laws. In here spare time she runs her own one electrical contracting business and volunteers her professional services to the Horizon House, a domestic violence shelter for women.

Lifeworks Mentoring's Green Room

"Green Room is our weekly group night, where you can join us for dinner and an activity every Wednesday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. It’s an opportunity for you to meet other LGBTQ youth, learn something new, and spend time in a LGBTQ affirming environment. LifeWorks groups are Free, Confidential and Chill!
The activity for Wednesday nights varies from week to week to keep things interesting. Activities include open discussions, career nights, movie nights, game nights, and workshops. Some activities are facilitated by youth leaders who are Peer Mentors or part of the LifeWorks Youth Council (LYC.)"

The fourth Wednesday of every month we have an informal presentation at Green Room called ASK! where we hear from a LGBT adult, or panel of adults, who share an interesting career or personal experience. This is an opportunity for you to meet positive role models and learn about potential careers. Presenters share information about what it’s like to be LGBT in their field and share their strategies for dealing with homophobia and transphobia out in the real world. Presenters have included police officers, business owners, doctors, retail managers, actors, artists/photographers, therapists, nutritionists, faith leaders, and activists. After presenters share their coming out story and tell us about their career we have time for Q&A.

CMG LA presents the third annual weekend retreat at the Gindling Hilltop Camp on the cliffs above Malibu, filled with dozens of activities to choose from (or none) to allow you to deepen and enrich your own personal journey, in your own personal way at your own personal pace.

Take this all-too-rare opportunity to slow down a bit, clear your mind, be more present, reflect and discover yourself in the company of warm and wonderful CMG brothers.

This weekend is not about religion -- it is an invitation to take a break from our insanely busy, stress-filled lives, and come together as a community. This is your chance to experience spirituality in the everyday. Join your CMG brothers in Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Activities, a Communal Campfire & other evening activities, and maybe even a StarWalk (weather permitting) -- or spend your time your own way.

Get in touch with your own spirituality in a safe, supportive environment in connection with nature, and hopefully leave a bit more at peace . . . and inspired to stay that way!

Lead an Activity: A major part of the 2012 Spirituality Weekend will be the four Activity periods during the weekend. These Activities will focus on six different categories where attendees can experience spirituality: Movement, Dance & Play, Art & Music, Bodywork, Rituals/Meditation, Physical Exercise, and "Other" (self-defined). All Activities will be led by attendees, so we invite and encourage all attendees to consider leading an Activity. Once your registration has been confirmed, you can get an Activity Proposal Form from the Activity Coordinator.

More Details: 1) All five meals (Saturday lunch through Sunday dinner) will be served buffet style with vegetarian options;. 2) All accommodations are in small cabins with bunks for 12-14 men and shared (indoor) bathrooms – there are no semi-private or private rooms. You must bring your own towels, sleeping bags, or sheets, blankets & pillows. 3) The weekend cost is $130, which includes accommodations, meals and all programs is payable online using Paypal or a credit card, or by check. Op-ed: Man Seeking Woman to Have a Baby

When one gay man told his friends he wanted to find a woman to have a baby, he wasn’t exactly met with hugs and congratulations.

It wasn't until age 35 when seemingly out of nowhere, I woke up and knew it was time for fatherhood. I was living in Los Angeles and my search began where most searches initially begin in Los Angeles — on Craigslist.
I posted ads in the strictly platonic personals section looking for someone to have my baby. I was a Will seeking his Grace. I was searching for the right co-parent for a non-traditional family arrangement that would be lightly infused with traditional sentimentality.
And guess what? I started getting replies. Many replies. Now I'm a 40-year-old man in the fifth year of his quest to have a child. The journey has spanned four cities and two continents. And it began with the first lady to ever respond to one of my posts: Dawn.
Our one-time coffee chat lacked the connection I imagined having with my Grace. And so I kept looking. But the people who knew me as somewhat self-involved, having never uttered a word about children nor shown any interest in procreating, met my search mostly with silence.
I was a youth leader at the MCC church in West Hollywood, helping mentor persons aged 18 to 24 in their coming-out process. And as my Craigslist ads continued to garner attention, I mentioned my newfound quest to a fellow youth leader named Melissa.
Maybe it was just bad timing, but do you know the feeling when you're telling someone a story and there happens to be a 101 distractions? When I told Melissa about my dream, she smiled and nodded until being whisked away unintentionally without saying a word.
Later that week, some of the youth leaders met at a barbecue, all of us adults but for the exception of one 8-year-old named Froy. It was like a natural, gravitational pull took over and my big brother instincts kicked in. Despite my being 6 feet tall, a bit on the awkward side, tall and lanky, the rest of the day was spent playing games.
I have also been accused of appearing freakishly youthful, like the original Karate Kid, who was 18-years-old for like two decades. I have named this phenomenon Ralph-Machi-itis. But regardless of slow-aging on the outside, we have to grow up sometime. Spending that afternoon with Froy not only helped cement my wanting to be a dad, but also made me feel like a child again. Something I had long forgotten.
After the barbeque, as I returned home that evening with a taste of what a future family life could be, I received an unexpected text. It was from Melissa and it read, "Based on what I saw today, you are going to be an amazing father."
I took the encouragement as a sign that I was most definitely on the right path, even though I ultimately did not find my co-parent in Los Angeles. The next year I moved back to New York where I reposted my Craigslist ads. Then another year went by of replies and coffee dates, but no co-parenting sparks.
So I started thinking outside of the box, and outside the country. This time, I posted my Craigslist ad in Australia. As early as age 7, I started to develop an affinity for Aussie pop-culture thanks to a leather-clad Olivia Newton-John — Sandy from Grease. In appreciation for all things Aussie, I moved to Australia, sight unseen.
In Melbourne, I made my first attempts at the turkey-baster method. Two attempts with two different women thankfully did not take — my blinding desire to be a dad prevented me from seeing that there were plenty of red flags.
Continuing my search, I discovered co-parenting websites and created profiles. Only then did I realize how many countless people are in a similar search, in so many countries.
On a Facebook page dedicated to co-parenting in Australia, I came across a profile picture of a lovely face. Something about her eyes and her smile was mommy-like. And so I sent the lovely-faced woman a quick message, "Are you seeking a co-parent? What is your location in Australia?" Two days later she replied, "Hi Fabian, I am. I live in Omaha, Nebraska. What is your location?"
I thought to myself, "Nebraska?" It was a state I’d never visited. And I had no plans of returning to the United States. Still, a few basic introductory emails soon turned into a fantastic phone conversation that had me shaking with excitement. We spoke as if we had known each other for 20 years, laughing and energetic. Our goals and beliefs matched so closely it was like speaking to a long lost sister.
Coincidentally, her name was Dawn, like the first woman I had met in Los Angeles five years prior. But the connection with this Dawn was like no other.
Our first Skype video chat blew the roof off any other conversation with anyone. We discussed how lonely this co-parenting search had been and that it was odd feeling so alone considering the hundreds or thousands of people out there in the same boat, navigating blindly.
We had both felt the sharp sting of disapproval. Even some hard-hitting comments came from those closest to us. One life-long friend told me, "I would feel sorry for the child that would come out of this type of experiment" and called our relationship "a splintered one from the beginning."
Another person told us it was egotistical that we seemed to talk only about ourselves and our openness to meet others, and not about the child.
One of the worst comments was that our child would come out of a loveless relationship.
But, what is love?
My child’s mother and father won’t have had sex, but that doesn't mean that child is not conceived out of love. It is love that is the driving force sustaining us on this journey.
Even though I had never met Dawn, I loved this beautiful stranger. I loved her honesty and her fearlessness.
Who are these people to judge and to insinuate that our bringing up a child won't be any better, structural, stable and loving than the way a traditional couple would? Countless modern families exist out there with well rounded and happy children who prove these non-believers wrong.
I am getting to know the person who might become the mother of my child. I have resisted just being an instant sperm donor to the first ovulating person I met. And I don’t regret the five years that’s taken because it’s been an amazing journey, and now I’m here at this new leap of faith about to come.

"Ventura County, California – Prosecutors announced on Wednesday they would retry teen Brandon McInerney for the execution-style murder of his gay classmate, Lawrence Fobes “Larry” King in adult court. This time, however, all hate crimes charges are being dropped. Maeve Fox, chief prosecutor in the case, said that the trial would begin on November 21 in Ventura County Superior Court. KABC in Los Angeles reports that defense attorneys for McInterney hope the case will be settled by plea bargain before the trial begins.

A mistrial was declared on September 2 when the nine-woman, three man jury in Chatsworth could not agree on a verdict. Some jurors have contended that McInerney, who was 14 at the time of the shooting, should never have been tried as an adult. They also have said they were not convinced by the prosecution that white supremacist, anti-gay prejudice led McInerney to kill his gender variant classmate, whom McInerney knew as “the little fag.” The defense successfully used a version of the outworn “gay panic defense” to switch sympathies of the jury and the public in the case, putting Larry King’s dress and habits on trial at least as much as the criminal act of their client, the brutal in-class shooting. Defense has consistently denied using the gay panic defense, and just has consistently employed it to insinuate that their client’s actions were mitigated by the intimidation he felt coming from a smaller, bullied gay teen.

In order to get a conviction, the prosecution has deleted all hate crimes charges, raising the ire of LGBTQ rights advocates around the nation. Once again, a courtroom in Southern California will be the arena for the validity of the gay panic defense in the most notorious anti-gay hate crime since the murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998."

Bullying has everyone worried and continues to endanger the well-being and lives of young people from all walks of life. The recent spate of gay youth sucides has drawn special attention to the tragedy that bullying can cause. The Friends of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA will host a presentation on this important subject as part of their "Open Mind" series on November 30, 2011 at 6:30PM at Covel Commons on the UCLA Campus. Admission is free but reservations are required.

Speakers will include UCLA Professor, Dr. Jaana Juvonen, the co-author of the joint UCLA-Rand study, "Peer Harrassment in Schools - the Plight of the Vulnerable and Victimized ; Mr. Robert Jacobson, Chief Legal Counsel for the La Mirada-Norfolk School District; Mr. Bob Riddle, Head of School at Crossroads High School in Santa Monica; and Ms. Bonnie Raskin, parent of a recent high school graduate who was bullied when attending a high school in Los Angeles.

In addition, the filmmakers of the upcoming documentary film "Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine" will show clips from their soon to be released documentary about the life of their friend , the University of Wyoming student who was murdered in 1998. A panel discussion and Q&A will follow the presentations.

We saw the third annual ThanXgiving Youth Social. The event was once again sponsored by Wells Fargo and was a great time for all who attended. The event was held at the Metropolitan Community Church, Los Angeles (MCCLA) on November 17th and had over 75 youth in attendance...and we even had some parents attend!
Prior to the event, a "mystery guest" was announced on the C.I.T.Y. x1 web site. As the event began, the guest was revealed, and it was none other than the Mayor of the City of West Hollywood, Abbe Land. Mayor Land welcomed the youth of the community and mentioned how proud she was of everyone involved with the event and everyone who attended. Also in attendance were Reverend Neil Thomas (of MCC/LA), Sue Sexton (Lesbian Gay Advisory Board Member), and the MCCLA Staff.

2006
The 4th annual ThanXgiving Youth Social returned to MCCLA for the 2nd-straight year. Over 100 youth from all over the area attended and were treated to free food, performances, and community resources. Councilmember Abbe Land attended her second ThanXgiving Youth event and dropped by to say Hello. Other guests included community leaders, the Trevor Project, members of the TRIBLE LA Youth Group, and several GSA Clubs.

2007
In 2007 we returned to Plummer Park for the first time in three years for our annual event. The house was packed from start to finish and although doors opened at 6:00pm, we had over 100 youth lining up outside of the park as early as 5:00pm. Several volunteers helped out at the event, which saw over 200 youth in attendance. Event attractions included live performances, giveaways, and community resources.

2010
"The Social Kickback" hosted over 250 youth from all over Southern California. The 8th annual event was highlighted by 2 live performances from Drew Mason, a special visit from Councilmembers Abbe Land & Lindsey Horvath, as well as a dance and laser show. All youth in attendance were treated to a complete Thanksgiving-style dinner and several giveaways as well. We were also joined by several members of the Los Angeles Fire Department, who were nice enough to join us throughout the evening by volunteering and helping serve food. Sparked by the unsolved 1998 murder of Rita Hester, the Transgender Day of Remembrance has grown from a little candlelight vigil on the streets of San Francisco to a worldwide memorial in major cities across the world. This Thursday marks the 10-year anniversary of that event and the city of West Hollywood will celebrate it with a reception, memorial service and a 9 p.m. candlelight march that will travel west on Santa Monica Boulevard to the Matthew Sheppard Square at the intersection of Santa Monica and Crescent Heights where a memorial service will encourage members of the transgender community to take a stand for their rights.

In 2011-2012, Congregation Kol Ami celebrates its 20th Anniversary. In their short history, Kol Ami has evolved into an important force in the Jewish, GLBT and civic communities. Its commitment to progressive spirituality, diversity, inclusion and social justice has been celebrated nationwide.

Congregation Kol Ami builds on the traditions of Judaism while respecting and welcoming everyone -- lesbian, gay, bisexual, straight, interfaith couples and our children. Together Rabbi Denise Eger and Cantor Mark Saltzman create a hamishe (“family-like”) atmosphere, safe for spiritual nurturing and connection.

Congregation Kol Ami places special emphasis on their Shabbat worship. Each Friday night (and on the first Saturday of the month), their worship services reflect a joyous, uplifting approach to prayer and spirituality. The service combines both Hebrew and English in a highly accessible liberal service. They use traditional prayer, interpretative prayer and at times guided meditations to express our connection to the Holy, and music is an essential element of every worship experience. The haunting melodies of old combined with contemporary musical selections create a vibrant, spiritual experience.

Models of Pride, a free, one-day, LGBTQ youth conference, is now accepting proposals for workshops to be presented on October 15, 2011 at University of Southern California (USC).

Purpose:

The purpose of the youth workshops is to provide Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Youth (LGBTQ), between the ages of 12 and 24, an opportunity to ask questions of themselves and their peers; to explore the nature of their orientation and identity; to gain an understanding about how their community relates to society in general; to become aware of community resources and realize that allies exist for them among their peers, in the adult LGBTQ community and in their schools.

Guidelines:

Models of Pride seeks proposals from both the youth and adult communities for potential workshops that embody our purpose. The planning committee encourages workshop proposals that integrate and acknowledge communities with regard to race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, culture, ability, age, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Workshop Topics in the past have included: Relationships · History · Sexuality · Family Issues · Political Activism · Gender Identity · Mental Health · Culture · Safer Sex · Self-Esteem · Recreation/Sports · Foster Care · Substance Use & Abuse · Literature · Spirituality · HIV/AIDS/STIs/STDs · Education · Religion · Disabilities · Careers · Gay-Straight Alliances · Immigration · Arts · Hate Crimes/Harassment · Ethnic/Cultural Identity · Media/Communications · Legal Issues & Rights.

We know the story of Mark’s heroism on flight United 93, and we know about the international Bingham Cup rugby tournament that honors him, but this film introduces us to the man behind the legend. "Robin and her partner Diane Olson have been called the Rosa Parks of the lesbian and gay civil rights movement. Tyler et al versus the County of Los Angeles made history, not only as the catalyst for the State Supreme Court’s decision granting equal marriage rights, but also for the ruling granting gay men and lesbians legal minority status for the first time in history.

As leaders in this fight and original plaintiffs in this case, the County of Los Angeles gave Robin and Diane the only marriage license issued on Monday, June 16, 2008, the evening before licenses were available to the public at large. That made them the first same-sex couple to be legally married in California.

On June 27, 2008, the City of Los Angeles honored Robin and Diane with a special community service award for being original plaintiffs in this monumental case. In addition, the City Council unanimously voted for June 16, their wedding day, to be forever known as “Marriage Equality Day” in Los Angeles.

As we all know, the fight is not over. On the day after passage of Proposition 8, the ballot measure banning gay marriage, Robin and Diane filed a personal suit asking the State Supreme Court of California to overturn this homophobic initiative.

Robin will speak about how she got the courage to be a pathfinder in the fight for marriage equality, and tell us how we can work effectively for LGBT civil rights.
